Rayford Brannigan Jr. opens his eyes at six o’clock. Momentarily alarmed, he remembers that he’s no longer occupying the familiar apartment above Ray’s Place Barbershop. He is in Kingsport, Massachusetts, and he’s renting a room at Mother Gamble’s Boarding House. Heading downstairs, he is greeted by Mother Gamble, who is preparing the morning meal.
The other boarders join Ray for breakfast at seven o’clock. He peruses the local paper over a cup of coffee, while the group eats and exchanges pleasantries. Looking at his watch, a young man hurriedly slurps down his coffee and walks out the door. A studious-looking gentleman picks up his briefcase and follows moments later. Ray excuses himself from the table, and asks Mother Gamble for a map of the town. Minutes later, he returns to his room with a map of Kingsport to plan his day.
By ten o’clock, Ray is behind the wheel of his Model T truck, exploring the town. The old, winding streets and tightly-bunched colonial homes make Ray feel slightly claustrophobic, but he continues on in hopes of stumbling upon CONVENTO DI SAN FRANCESCO or, better, Ivy Morgan and Jonas Markham. Having explored the west side of town, Ray heads in to Central Hill for a bite to eat. After lunch, he stumbles upon a local haberdashery and purchases a new suit. While waiting for the alterations to be complete, Ray walks about the neighborhood, taking note of the police and fire departments, as well as the Kingsport Public Library, which has a Closed for Repairs sign posted on the padlocked front door. Suddenly, Ray remembers that he read about a break-in at the library while thumbing through the local paper at breakfast.
As late afternoon turns to early evening, Ray slowly drives about the east side of town. Unable to find his quarry, Ray heads back west, briefly stopping to look in on a local eatery called the Sea’s Harvest. When he arrives back at the boarding house a few minutes after nine o’clock, he finds Mother Gamble waiting at the front door, annoyed. Quailing at her admonishments, He promises to remember the curfew and returns to his room.
Settling in to his bed, map in hand and flask on the nightstand, Ray resolves to wake early and drive to Miskatonic University. Hopeful that Henry Armitage will know the whereabouts of Ivy and Jonas, Ray closes his eyes and lets sleep descend upon him.
