The investigators are on their way to Ivy’s Morningside Heights home when she changes her mind and asks Jonas to drive to Hell’s Kitchen. Ivy and Jonas lead Alistair into an alley, and then to the stained mahogany front door of The Slaughtered Lamb. Once inside, they tell their tale to the group assembled, and the once tee-totaling Jonas Markham drinks himself stupid. The investigators leave the strange, metal cylinder they took from the creature they encountered at Harris’ lab with Alec Long, who promises to give it to Andrew Payne, a Lamb regular who may be able to discover its origins. After several hours, the investigators drive to Ivy’s house.
The following morning, they visit Professor Pearson at Columbia University, and let him know Effram Harris’ fate. Pearson is visibly shaken by the news, but thanks the investigators for their efforts.
The last few days have worn the investigators to an emotional nub, and they are desperate for something to take their minds off of current events. Ivy suggests target practice. Jonas (nursing his first hangover) and Alistair agree, and the group heads out to a semi-secluded area to shoot.
In a gesture of goodwill, Alistair offers to buy dinner for the group (although, in actuality, it will be Columbia University footing the bill). A quick stop at the concierge desk at the Hotel Belleclaire procures reservations at the Puncheon Grotto, a chic new restaurant at 42 W 49th Street. The group cleans up in Alistair’s room and then heads out for a night on the town.
A slightly inebriated group leaves the Puncheon in good spirits. Ivy offers her Morningside Heights home for a nightcap. While Jonas gets acquainted with a snifter of Cognac, Ivy asks the stuffed-shirted professor to present his lecture, Beowulf: King or Con? in its entirety. Never one to pass up an academic challenge, Alistair obliges.
Both Jonas and Ivy realize (they got a hint of it at The Slaughtered Lamb) that Professor Sinclair is a fantastic orator. His lecture is well-reasoned, witty, and captivating. Even with a bottle of Bordeaux coursing through his veins, Alistair is a master speaker. However, Professor Sinclair’s best efforts cannot fight the slumber that quickly besets Ivy Morgan and Jonas Markham. The two fall asleep in comfy armchairs, while Alistair appraises the snifter of Cognac. Soon, the proper English gentleman has fallen asleep with his shoes on…
